LatticeECP3™ FPGA family has been chosen from among hundreds of nominations as a Finalist in the 20th Annual EDN Innovation Awards competition.

“We received an impressive number of nominations for our 2009 Innovation Awards program,” said Rick Nelson, EDN editor-in chief.  “Over the past several weeks, our editors faced the difficult task of narrowing down an impressive field of contenders and finding the freshest, most inventive, and undeniably outstanding nominations that were worthy of being named Finalists for EDN’s 2009 Innovation Awards.  In the FPGA category, Lattice’s ECP3 FPGA family was one of the outstanding products our editors chose.”

The LatticeECP3 family defines a new mid-range, value-based class of FPGAs, not only by further reducing costs, but also by reducing total power consumption by over 50% for typical designs, compared to competitive SERDES-capable FPGAs. Allegro MicroSystems, introduces new Voice Coil Motor driver designed for camera phone auto focus and zoom applications

Allegro introduces the A3907, a new voice coil motor (VCM) driver with I2C serial interface designed for camera lens auto focus and zoom applications. The operating voltage range for this new device is 2.3 V to 5.5 V. It has a maximum output current of 102 mA with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. This new device is targeted at both the consumer and telecommunications markets.

Allegro MicroSystems, Inc. introduces a new programmable Two-Wire Hall-Effect Sensor, targeted at position sensing applications

Allegro introduces a new high precision, programmable two-wire Hall-effect linear sensor with a pulse width modulated (PWM) output. This is the first linear Hall-effect sensor from Allegro to include a voltage regulator, which allows the device to be powered directly from a battery. The duty cycle (DC) of the PWM output signal is proportional to an applied magnetic field.

Allegro’s A1354 device converts an analog signal from its internal Hall sensor element to a digitally encoded PWM output signal. The coupled noise immunity of the digitally encoded PWM output is far superior to the noise immunity of an analog output signal. This new device is targeted at both the automotive and industrial sectors.

SiLabs reveals it new Large Array Touch Sense enabled controller

Silabs have introduced the C8051F7xx familjenl of high pin-count MCUs for cost-sensitive, high I/O embedded systems. This family is the first to offer a new, patent-pending touch sensing feature that is robust, accurate, responsive and easy to configure. Offering up to 54 general purpose I/O pins and a 25 MIPS 8051 CPU, the C8051F7xx family brings a high level of processing power and flexibility to applications such as industrial controls, security systems, residential HVAC, home appliances, keyboards, cash machines and fax/printer/scanner front panels.
The industry’s fastest touch sense on-chip peripheral uses a capacitance-to-digital converter (CDC) with a 40 us acquisition time that when combined with the 25 MIPS CPU on the C8051F7xx enables sophisticated human interface functions, even when large arrays of touch sense elements are used. To combat issues in electrically noisy environments, the CDC offers best-in-class noise immunity, insuring reliable performance. With up to 32 touch sensing inputs, featuring wake-on-touch, the MCU can be placed in a power saving mode and wake quickly upon touch to save overall system power in applications. An intuitive software GUI allows fast and easy configuration. And, an API library is provided for all common touch sense configurations such as virtual buttons, wheels and sliders.
A separate capacitive touch sense evaluation kit provides fast and easy evaluation of the Silicon Labs capacitive sensing solution. To enter to win a free development kit for the C8051F7xx, click  www.silabs.com/C8051F7xxgiveawayl.

Allegro MicroSystem Introduces a New Family of Switches and Latches

Allegro introduces a new family of Hall-effect switches and latches that are extremely temperature-stable and stress-resistant sensors suited for operation over extended temperature ranges to 150°C. Superior high temperature performance is made possible through dynamic offset cancellation, reducing the residual offset voltage normally caused by device over-molding, temperature dependencies, and thermal stress. Allegro’s A1220 and A1221 devices are most commonly used to detect the speed and direction of ring magnets for motor commutation. The A1120 is most commonly used to detect the end position in wiper systems and multiple discrete positions in shift selectors.
