Processor Core With Several Peripheral Functions

Microcontrollers are semiconductor chips that combine a processor core with several peripheral functions. Of course, the working memory and the program memory are also included. Some chips also offer EEprom memory for storing parameters.

Today, a microcontroller's periphery is extremely diverse. It ranges from outstanding timer modules with several special features to interfaces with state-of-the-art design. Modern interfaces include USB, Can, Ethernet, LIN, Uart, SPI and I2C.

Analog Functions Are Integrated in Almost Every Microcontroller

Needless to say that analog functions are currently integrated in almost every microcontroller. These include ADCs (analog-to-digital converters), DACs (digital-to-analog converters) or power amplifiers. As far as the required supply voltage is concerned, modern microcontrollers have an integrated analog regulator. The development of microcontrollers is clearly moving towards increasingly complex, extremely powerful single-chip computer systems for a wide range of applications.
